Case Study: Slum Housing in Dharavi
Dharavi, in Mumbai, is one of the largest slum areas in Asia. Thousands of families live in very
small houses built with tin sheets, plastic and wood. These houses are often crowded, lack proper
ventilation, and do not have clean toilets or drinking water. Because of this, people living there
face health problems such as cough, fever and water-borne diseases. Despite these difficulties,
many people in Dharavi work in small industries like pottery, leather, textiles and recycling. Their
hard work supports their families and even contributes to the economy of the city.
Based on your understanding of the text, answer the following questions.
1. What problems do people face while living in slum houses like those in Dharavi?
2. How do people living in Dharavi still contribute to the city’s economy?
3. Why is it important for every family to have a clean and safe house?
Skills Covered: Critical thinking • Brainstorming • Ethics
