Case Study: Langar System in India SEL
In Gurdwaras across India, food is prepared and served to thousands of people every day in a
community kitchen called langar. Anyone, rich or poor, young or old, can eat here for free. The
meals are simple but healthy, and includes dal, roti, rice and vegetables, which together make
a balanced diet. The food is cooked with care, following cleanliness and preservation methods
to serve such large numbers. Volunteers work together to chop vegetables, cook, serve and
clean. People are also encouraged to eat mindfully, sitting together on the floor which teaches
equality and respect.
