A community consists of the people who live around us. They are our family members,

our neighbours and the people who help us in our everyday activities.

Community Helpers

We cannot do all our work ourselves. We need people to do many things for us. Several
people work hard to help us to make our life easy and comfortable. They provide their

services to us by doing different kinds of work. Each kind of work is called an occupation.
The people who provide services to us are called community helpers. They are paid for

their services. Doctors, nurses, policemen, firefighters and teachers are all community
helpers. Let’s learn about some of them.

y A doctor uses tools like stethoscope and treats patients in a hospital.

y A nurse looks after patients in a hospital after a doctor treats them.

y A policeman looks over the law and order of a place.
y A firefighter puts out fire.

y A teacher uses tools like blackboard and chalk or a smart board and teaches children
in a school.

y A tailor uses things like needle, thread and sewing machine to stitch clothes.

y A potter uses wet clay to make things like pots, diyas and lamps using hands and the
potter’s wheel.

y A cobbler mends old and torn shoes and uses tools like hammer, needle, nails, thread
and an awl while working.
