Case Study: Life in Jaisalmer – The Golden City of Rajasthan
Jaisalmer, also called the Golden City, is famous for its beautiful fort made of yellow sandstone.
It is located in the Thar Desert where summers are very hot and water is scarce. People living
here face challenges like scarcity of drinking water, extreme heat and sandstorms. To overcome
these, they build houses with small windows and thick walls to keep them cool. Traditional attire
like cotton turbans and loose clothes help protect from the sun and heat. Food is often made
from millets, pulses and dried vegetables because fresh vegetables are hard to grow in sandy
soil. In spite of the challenges, Jaisalmer attracts many tourists from India and abroad to see its
fort, desert fairs, camel rides and folk music.
Based on your understanding of the text, answer the following questions.
1. Why do people in Jaisalmer build houses with small windows and thick walls?
2. Imagine you are visiting Jaisalmer. What two things would you carry with you to stay
comfortable in the desert, and why?
3. How do the food and clothing of people in Jaisalmer show their adaptation to the desert
environment?
