Insects are tiny animals found in soil, water, plants and air. They have six legs, two antennae and
bodies divided into three parts: head, thorax and abdomen. Some insects fly with wings while
others crawl or do both. Their mouthparts are specially designed to suck nectar, blood or chew
food. To protect themselves, insects hide in cracks, holes, or tree trunks. Spiders and worms are
different from insects. Bees collect nectar, produce honey and also help in pollination. Insect
colonies like those of ants, bees and termites show cooperation, with queens, workers and
soldiers having specific roles. Insects can be useful like honeybees, silkworms and butterflies, or
harmful like mosquitoes, houseflies and termites. They spread diseases, damage crops or spoil
furniture. Food chains and food webs explain how insects, plants and animals are connected in
nature, showing the balance and importance of every living being.
