Pukka houses have many rooms like drawing room, dining room, kitchen, bathrooms

and bedrooms. Some pukka houses even have additional rooms like garage, servant
quarter and store room.

Due to the growing population and shortage of space, many
tall buildings are being built in cities and towns these days.

Each building has many houses called flats or apartments.

One can even find bungalows in cities and towns. They are

big houses with gardens and lawns. They may be one or two
storeys high.

We must respect the hard work of people who build houses for us. They spend long hours
working in the sun, rain and dust to give us safe and comfortable homes. Their efforts deserve our
gratitude, kindness and respect.

Slums

Slums are the areas in cities where people live in very small
kutcha makeshift houses. They are made of cheap material

such as plastic, cardboard, thin sheets or plywood. These
houses usually don’t even have basic facilities like water and
electricity. People from poor families who move from villages

to cities in search of work live in them. In some cities, the
government is providing low-cost houses at alternate sites slum
for the slum dwellers.

The kind of house we build depends upon the region where we live, its climate and the
