Case Study: The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and School Hygiene
In 2014, the Government of India started the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. One important part
of this mission was building toilets and teaching children about cleanliness, hygiene and
handwashing in schools. Earlier, many children, especially girls, did not attend school regularly
because of poor toilet and hygiene facilities. But after the mission, schools across India got new
toilets, handwashing stations and awareness programmes. Teachers and health workers taught
children to wash hands before eating, after using the toilet and to keep their surroundings
clean. As a result, children became healthier, missed fewer school days due to illness, and learnt
the importance of personal hygiene, safe posture while studying and staying clean to avoid
diseases. This case shows how good hygiene habits help in both health and education.
Based on your understanding of the text, answer the following questions.
1. How did the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan improve children’s health and school attendance?
2. Why is handwashing an important part of hygiene?
3. What lesson can we learn about the link between hygiene and education?
