Challenges in Coastal Plains

The eastern coastal plains (Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal) face frequent cyclones
that damage crops, houses and livelihoods. For example, the Odisha coast has faced
repeated cyclones like Fani (2019), which displaced thousands of people and destroyed
property. Also, the agricultural land sometimes becomes unfit due to salty seawater

mixing with soil and groundwater. People depend on fish for their livelihood in such
places. So, when the resources decline, they face major problems.

            Challenges in Islands

Islands like Andaman and Nicobar are far from mainland India, so transportation of
goods and services is costly and slow. Also, people face frequent cyclones, high tides

and tsunamis in these areas. The 2004 tsunami caused massive destruction in Andaman.
Also, in Lakshadweep, rising sea levels due to climate change threaten to submerge
parts of the islands affects both homes

            Traditional Food in India

The traditional food in India is deeply influenced by landforms and climate. Let’s learn

            about them.

The cold climate and difficult terrain in the mountains and valleys influence the type of
food people eat. Foods here are generally warm, rich in energy, and made using locally
            available grains, pulses and vegetables.

Rogan josh (aromatic lamb curry) and kahwa (traditional green tea with saffron and nuts)

are commonly enjoyed in Kashmir. Siddu (a steamed wheat bread stuffed with nuts) is a
            common dish in Himachal Pradesh.
