Case Study: India’s Cleanest City
Indore, a city in Madhya Pradesh, has been awarded the title of India’s Cleanest City several
times under the Swachh Survekshan rankings. Earlier, Indore struggled with garbage piles on
streets and poor waste management. In 2016, the Indore Municipal Corporation introduced a
strict waste segregation system. Households were asked to separate waste into wet waste and
dry waste before handing it over to garbage collectors. Special awareness campaigns were run
in schools and neighbourhoods to teach people about the importance of waste management.
Today, Indore has a door-to-door waste collection system, compost plants to turn wet waste
into manure, and recycling units to process plastic and paper. The city not only looks cleaner but
has also created jobs for many people in the waste management system. Indore stands as a role
model for the rest of India in proper waste management.
Based on your understanding of the text, answer the following questions.
1. What steps did Indore take to improve its waste management system?
2. How does separating wet waste and dry waste help in recycling and waste management?
3. Why do you think Indore is called a role model for other Indian cities in cleanliness?
