Case Study: Midday Meal Scheme SEL
The Midday Meal Scheme is a government programme launched in India to provide free,
nutritious lunches to school children in government and government-aided schools. It was
officially launched at the national level in 1995. Tamil Nadu was the first state to introduce it in the
1960s under Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. The objectives of the programme include improvement
in school enrolment and attendance, providing nutritious food to fight malnutrition and
encouraging educational participation among children from poor families.
Based on your understanding of the text, answer the following questions.
1. How might providing meals at school influence the way children from poor families view
education?
2. Why do you think the government chose schools as the place to implement a nutrition
programme for children?
3. In what ways could a simple lunch at school contribute to a child’s overall development
beyond just health?
