                  Case Study: Midday Meal Scheme                                                        SEL


                 The Midday Meal Scheme is a government programme launched in India to provide  free,
                 nutritious lunches to school children in government and government-aided schools. It was
                 officially launched at the national level in 1995. Tamil Nadu was the first state to introduce it in the
                 1960s under Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. The objectives of the programme include improvement
                 in school enrolment and  attendance, providing  nutritious  food to fight malnutrition  and
                 encouraging educational participation among children from poor families.

                 Based on your understanding of the text, answer the following questions.
                   1.   How might providing meals at school influence the way children from poor families view
                       education?
                   2.   Why do you think the government chose schools as the place to implement a nutrition
                       programme for children?

                   3.   In what ways could a simple lunch at school contribute to a child’s overall development
                       beyond just health?
