Directions

There are four main directions – east, west, north and south. If we stand facing the rising
sun, east will be directly in front of us and west will be behind us. If we stretch both arms
sideways in this position, our left hand will point towards north, while our right hand

will point towards south.

Map

A map is a detailed drawing that shows the exact location of a place. It is drawn on a flat
surface such as paper by a cartographer. It shows directions in relation to the sun which

helps us locate places more accurately. A map uses signs, symbols and scales to make it
easier to find and understand different locations. A collection of maps is called an atlas.

Types of Maps

There are three types of maps. They are political, physical and thematic.

A political map shows states or countries, their boundaries,
capital cities as well as other important places.

A physical map shows various landforms and water bodies
like mountains, deserts and rivers.

A thematic map gives information about things like
