Case Study: Kolkata’s Underwater Metro Tunnel
Kolkata became the first city in India to have an underwater metro tunnel with the completion
of the East–West Metro project. The tunnel runs under the Hooghly River and connects the cities
of Kolkata and Howrah. It is about 30 metres below ground and helps people travel quickly and
safely without getting stuck in traffic. This metro line reduces road congestion and provides a
fast, modern way of travel in a crowded city. It is an excellent example of how smart structures
like tunnels and subways can make life easier and more connected in urban areas.
Based on your understanding of the text, answer the following questions.
1. Which two cities are connected by India’s first underwater metro tunnel?
2. How deep is the underwater metro tunnel built in Kolkata?
3. What problem does the East–West Metro help to reduce in the city?
4. Why is the Kolkata underwater metro tunnel an example of a smart structure?
