Animals in Natural Surroundings

Like human beings, animals also need shelter to protect themselves from the changing
weather conditions and enemies, and to take rest. Some animals live in natural

surroundings while others build shelters for themselves.

According to the places where animals live, they can be classified as terrestrial, arboreal,
            aquatic, amphibian and aerial animals.

            Terrestrial Animals

Animals that live on land are called terrestrial animals. They live in different types of
            homes.

y Animals like bats, bears, lions and tigers live in rock caves.
y Snakes live in natural holes in the ground, under logs or
in abandoned anthills. Rats also live in holes and rabbits
                   build burrows to live.

y Elephants, deer and giraffes live in the open in a forest.

Animals like monkeys and squirrels live on trees. They are
called arboreal animals. Chimpanzees live on trees and on

                                           the ground.

            Aquatic Animals

A large variety of animals live in or around water bodies
like ponds, lakes, seas and oceans. They are called aquatic

animals. Water provides these animals with the food and
oxygen they need. Fish, sea anemones, starfish, crabs, jellyfish

and whales live in water. Eels live in small holes in coral reefs.
Crabs usually live around water on the ocean floor. Starfish
live among rocks of coastal areas. whales

Have you ever noticed shells on a seashore? Shells vary in

size and shape and are home to sea creatures like snails and
turtles. Mussels and crabs are some other seaside animals.
