Seals, walruses and sea lions are semi-aquatic animals. They

live in the polar regions in cold seawater. They come onto
land to reproduce and rest. Then, they move back into water

for food.

Animals like frogs, toads and newts live both on land and in
water. They are called amphibians.

Aerial Animals

Animals like birds, bats and some insects can fly and stay in

the air for a long time. They are called aerial animals.

Animals in Groups

Some animals like to stay together in groups. They are often

called social animals. They live in groups to raise their young
ones, to fight enemies and to get warmth from each others’
bodies. They move in groups for safety. They sense danger
better when they are together and run very fast. Animals like

bees, ants, fish and penguins live in big colonies in which each
has a specific task to do. colony of penguins

Most animal groups have a leader who is strong and dominating. It takes the major
decisions and warns the group of danger. For example, in a pride of lions, it is the
lionesses who hunt for other members of the herd. Similarly, in a herd of elephants, the

oldest female is the decision-maker and other members follow her.

Animals and Their Behaviour

Some animals are shy and do not come near us. They run away

on seeing us. Cockroaches, squirrels and rats run away if we go
near them. A tortoise hides its head, legs and tail in its shell if
we touch it.

Animals like dogs, cats, dolphins and horses are friendly.
They become our friends easily if we pat them or touch them tortoise pulling head

lovingly. and limbs inside shell
