Types of Ears in Animals and Birds

Animals have ears that vary in shape and size.

y Some animals like rabbits, elephants and foxes have very big ears. These help them
to catch the slightest of sound from any direction.

y Animals like rats and hippopotamus have small rounded ears.

y Dogs move their ears to know where a sound is coming from. They may have big or
small ears.

y Polar bears have very small ears to reduce heat loss from their body.
y Birds do not have external ears. They have two holes in their head that help them to

hear. Lizards have visible ear openings on their head to hear.

y Snakes do not have ears at all. They sense vibrations on the ground.

Body Coverings in Animals

Animals have different body coverings. Some have scales, some have hair while some
have feathers on their body.
