Case Study: Stargazing in Ladakh

Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir is known as one of the best places in India to see the night
sky. The region has very little pollution and clear air because of its high altitude. Tourists and
scientists often visit places like Hanle Observatory in Ladakh to study the stars, constellations
and even galaxies with the help of powerful telescopes. The Indian Astronomical Observatory
at Hanle is one of the highest observatories in the world. Many local people also share stories
about constellations that they use for navigation, farming and festivals. For example, farmers
look at the position of stars to predict seasonal changes. This shows how closely the sky is linked
to our daily life, science and culture in India.
