Parts of a Plant

We see many trees in our neighbourhood in places like gardens, parks and on the
roadside. They are grown for their beauty, to give shade and to keep air fresh and cool.

Let’s learn about the parts of plants and how they help plants grow.

Plants have two main parts – root system and shoot system. The root system grows
below the soil while the shoot system grows above the soil. The shoot system includes

the stem, leaves, branches, fruits, flowers and buds. Let’s learn more about roots and

Root System

Roots are of two types – taproots and fibrous roots. Taproots

have one main root that grows straight downwards with many
small roots branching out of it. Carrot, radish, beetroot, parsnip,
turnip, oak tree, pine tree and fir tree have taproots.

Fibrous roots have several roots of similar size that grows from
the base of the stem. Grass, cereal crops like wheat, rice, maize,
barley, oats and millets have fibrous roots.
