Case Study: Millets – India’s Superfood
In many parts of India, especially in Rajasthan, Karnataka and Odisha, farmers grow millets such
as ragi, jowar and bajra. These grains are rich in nutrients like iron, calcium and fibre. They keep
the body strong, give energy and help in fighting diseases. Earlier, people used to eat fewer
millets and were dependent more on rice and wheat. This caused some health problems like
weak bones and anaemia. To solve this, the Government of India started promoting millets
again. In 2023, the United Nations even declared it the ‘International Year of Millets’ with India
playing a leading role.
Based on your understanding of the text, answer the following questions.
1. Why are millets called a superfood?
2. How do millets help in keeping our body healthy?
