Landforms on the Earth

The surface of our Earth is not the same everywhere. It has many types of landforms and
water bodies. Mountains, hills, plateaus, plains and deserts are some landforms on the

Earth. Oceans, rivers, lakes and seas are the major water bodies found on the Earth.

The natural features on the Earth’s surface are called landforms. Let’s learn about the
basic landforms on the Earth.

Mountains, Hills and Valleys

A mountain is a raised level of land with sloping sides and a sharp peak. A small
mountain is called a hill. A chain of mountains is known as a mountain range. The low
area between two hills or two mountains is known as a valley. The Himalayas in the

north of our country is a mountain range.

Plateaus

A plateau is an area of raised land with a flat top. It is also known as tableland as it looks
