A Stroll among Nature

Subhashini was walking with her grandmother in the
village garden. She pointed to the plants around
them. “Look Subhashini, every plant has two main
parts – the root system and the shoot system. Roots
hold the plant in the soil and absorb water, while the
shoot grows above the ground, carrying leaves, flowers
and fruits.” Subhashini touched a leaf and noticed its
texture and shape. Grandma explained, “Leaves may
be big or small, round or long, and their venation
can be straight or net-like. They make food for
the whole plant.” Subhashini was amazed and
             started humming.
“Roots are deep, shoots stand tall,
Leaves make food to feed them all.

             Flowers bloom with colours bright,
             Nature’s gift, a lovely sight.”

They walked further and saw different types of flowers and Grandma
even told Subhashini the vernacular names of all the
flowers. Grandma said, “Plants also provide us with
medicines, natural dyes for clothes and food. That
is why people take care of plants, watering them
and even performing rituals like tying sacred threads
around trees.” Subhashini thought of planting a sapling
                                                        near her house.
                                                           “Medicines, colours, fruits they share,
Plants give us love, show they care.

Water them well, help them grow,
They give us more than we know.”
