We obtain a variety of food from plants. Let’s learn about them.
Cereals
Wheat, rice, maize, millet and oat are some cereals. They are also called grains. They are
rich in carbohydrates. They are the seeds of plants. Rice is the staple food of most people
in the world. It is eaten in a variety of forms. Some grains like oats and cornflakes are
eaten as breakfast cereals.
Pulses
Pulses are dried seeds of certain plants. They are rich in protein and help our body to
grow. Black gram, kidney bean, green gram and chickpea are all pulses.
Fruits and Vegetables
Plants give us a variety of fruits like apple, pear, guava, grapes and papaya. Some popular
vegetables are potato, cauliflower, cabbage, tomato and onion. Fruits and vegetables
are rich sources of vitamins and minerals. They are called protective foods.
Nuts
Nuts like groundnut, cashew, almond and walnut are obtained from plants. They are rich
in fats, some vitamins and minerals.
Oilseeds
Oil is one of the most important ingredients in cooking. It is extracted by crushing the
seeds of some plants like groundnut, mustard, sunflower, soya bean, coconut and rice
bran. These seeds are called oilseeds.
