Food Groups

There are five food groups that are essential for us to include in our daily diet.

            Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are energy-giving foods. They provide us instant

energy to perform our daily activities. Some common sources
of carbohydrates are rice, wheat, bread and potatoes.

                                         Proteins sources of carbohydrates

Proteins are bodybuilding foods. They help in the repair of our

body and in the growth of new muscles in our body. Some
common sources of proteins include milk, pulses, cottage
cheese (paneer), eggs, fish and chicken.

            Fats

Fats are also energy-giving foods. They are known to provide
more energy than carbohydrates. They also keep our body
warm. Some common sources of fats are oil, ghee (clarified

            butter), butter and nuts.
                                                                                             sources of fats
                                         Vitamins

Vitamins are called protective foods because they protect us
from diseases. They also keep our body functioning well. Fruits,
vegetables and milk are the common sources of different types

                                         of vitamins.

            Minerals

Minerals make our bones and teeth strong. They also help
the body work properly. Therefore, minerals are also called
protective foods. They are commonly found in milk, leafy green

            vegetables and fish.
                                                                                           sources of minerals
            Roughage

Roughage is the part of plants that our bodies are unable to completely digest. It is also
referred to as fibre or dietary fibre.
