Spices
Spices come from flowers, fruits, bark, seeds and roots of some plants. They add flavour
and taste to food.
Animals are also an important source of food. We get many nourishing items from them.
Let’s learn about them.
Milk
Milk is called a ‘complete food’ because it contains proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and
water in the right amount. It makes our bones and teeth strong. From milk, we also
make many other useful products such as butter, ghee, cheese, curd and yoghurt.
Honey
Honey is obtained from honeybees. It is used as a sweetener and even as an antiseptic.
It also soothes a sore throat.
Eggs
Eggs are rich in proteins and vitamins. They help build muscles and give energy. Eggs
are usually eaten boiled, fried or as omelettes. They are also used in cakes, pastries and
puddings.
Fish
Fish is one of the most widely eaten animal foods in coastal areas. It is full of proteins
and healthy oils called omega-3 fatty acids, which are very good for the heart and brain.
Fish can be cooked in many ways. They can be fried, grilled or made into curry. Dried and
salted fish are also eaten in some regions.
Chicken
